Al Hall, Originator of the Tallahassee Scientific Society
For 20 years, Mr. Al Hall, an electrical engineer worked for the City of Tallahassee, keeping our electricity grid operational. After a recent struggle with cancer, he succumbed Saturday May 3rd, 2008.
I recognize him as a man of great passion, providing a forum to encourage the public to learn about science and technology. In 1988, shortly after arriving with his family from Jamaica, he told me about his “Concepts of a Society of Scientists and Technologists.”
Mr. Hall's vision had 11 objectives. He recruited a core group of passionate citizens with common interests and concerns to help him in this venture. Our first public meeting was in 1989, and Tallahassee Scientific Society (TSS) incorporated in 1990. Mr. Hall wanted wide attendance and participation of our citizens. Basically, within a year he had developed the TSS, an organization that still thriving day, with approximately 50 community members.
We all miss Mr. Al Hall, an extraordinary citizen and engineer, friend, religious man, and family man. His wife, Grace Hall, and their grown children miss him dearly. He was a special man to Tallahassee, and we were fortunate to have him these 20+ years from his native country of Jamaica.
Sincerely,
Penny J. Gilmer, Ph. D., D. Sc.Ed.
Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, FSU
