ABOUT

Mentoring - A Great Opportunity
Mentoring is an exercise in nobility and altruism: nobility, because this quality is best expressed in looking out for the good of others; and altruism because the source of that nobility is within ourselves. All of our members are encouraged to lend a hand to our science teachers and students. Having passed through the school system ourselves, we are aware of its needs; and having overcome the difficulties arising from those needs, we are invited to help others who are struggling in search of solutions.

Mathematics and the Sciences
Many of our teachers would welcome assistance from persons who use some of the more difficult-to-grasp concepts of physics, chemistry, algebra, calculus, trigonometry, etc., in their daily careers; in short, from the viewpoint of practical experience in the use of these concepts.

And there are also students who need some extra encouragement in grasping these concepts: they need to be "mentored."

Perpetuating the Viability of Our Profession
Our altruistic effort is often referred to as "giving back to society" some of that with which society has blessed us; but let us add to this the benefit of "passing on" the baton of scientific knowledge to the rising generation of scientists, thereby investing in the continued viability of our own profession. The need for this has been well recognized in professional circles in recent years; it is often referred to as a duty instead of a desirable option. But as members of the Tallahassee Scientific Society, let us seek to fulfill our educational objective by carrying out this service.

How to Register
Please use the Registration Form to indicate the area(s) in which you would like to help. You will observe that the choice of a school was not mentioned, as we recognize the risk of some schools having large numbers of assistants, while others may have virtually none; but if for any reason you wish to state a preference, please do so in the "Comments" section of the form. Please download the form, complete it, and mail to TSS Committee on Mentoring, 4335 Sherborne Road, Tallahassee, FL 32303.

State and Local Government employers in Tallahassee provide for this type of activity by employees (by arrangement in good time, of course). Please review the governing conditions at your workplace, for guidance in determining your availability.
